Creative drumming and DBT informed interventions to support emotional regulation

I am a  qualified mental health nurse with over 10 years experience working in mental health services, including CAMHS, adult services and eating disorder services, providing DBT informed therapies.

I have played the drums for over 20 years in different capacities. In recent years I have found that combining the joy of playing the drums with DBT informed interventions is a great way for people to access this type of therapy and learn skills in emotional regulation.

These are 1-1 sessions designed for people of all ages and take place in Easton, Bristol.

The sessions will include:

- Learning drum beats each week to promote mindfulness.

- Reflection skills for understanding emotions

- Strategies to manage overwhelming emotions

- Distress tolerance techniques

- Acceptance

- Strategies to challenge and change emotional responses

I have many years experience working with people with neurodiversity. If you are neurodiverse and would like to try this type of therapy, we can work together (and with parents/carers) to make sure any adjustments are made to support you.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT is a talking therapy designed to develop skills in emotional regulation.

DBT emphasises acceptance and change, aiming to help individuals understand and accept their feelings while also learning skills to manage them more effectively. It embraces the idea that our reality is often made up of opposing  thoughts and emotions, and both can be held as true at the same time.

Benefits of drumming

Focus on the Present: The act of playing requires you to concentrate on the beat, the feel of the drum or sticks, and the sounds you are creating, drawing your attention away from worries about the past or future.

Rhythmic Anchor: The repetitive nature of drumming provides a stable point of focus for your mind.

Sensory Engagement: Drumming engages multiple senses – touch, hearing, and even the physical movement of your body – grounding you in the present experience.

Quieting the Mind: The focused engagement with rhythm can help to quiet the constant internal chatter, similar to breath awareness techniques in traditional mindfulness.

Mastering a skill to boost self esteem: As you begin to master different drum beats you will notice an increase in confidence and self esteem.

I have an enhanced DBS certificate and I am on the DBS update service. DBS certificate and Nursing and Midwifery Council PIN will be provided during the first session.
